Americas Before Columbus Essay Essay Example
Americas Before Columbus Essay Essay Before the Europeans adventurers had arrived. the posterities of the prehistoric innovators and ulterior migrators ââ¬â the Native Americans ââ¬â had formed a assortment of folks throughout North America. Each folk was related. Some were simple nomads who roamed through the West of the continent. while some were forest inhabitants who worked as huntsmans and fishermen. The southwest part of North America was home to the farming people of the Pueblo state. populating significant metropoliss of rock or adobe ( clay ) . In the Four-Corners ( Utah. Colorado. Arizona and New Mexico ) country was where the Anasazi people ( a. k. a. the ââ¬Å"ancient onesâ⬠) were settled. Their civilization began in about 100 BC. Along the Mississippi we small towns of the Mound Builders who built elephantine earthworks atop which they worshiped their Gods. At this clip. the Native Americans spoke many different linguistic communications. some as different from each other as Italian from English. More than 200 linguistic communications and idioms were developed. There were great fluctuations in imposts and traditions from folk to tribe. Much of North America was non a really good for people to populate in. which is why non that many people lived in North America around 1500. The winters are excessively long to turn harvests. and there wasââ¬â¢t sufficiency works life turning in the natural state to back up people unless there was a batch of land for each individual. In the sou-west. there are immense comeuppances. and even most of the manner up the Pacific seashore ( in what is now California ) it is by and large excessively dry for farming. You can merely farm utilizing irrigation. The early Pueblo people used irrigation for farming. The Great Plains. in the center of the continent. is a grassland for herds of animate beings like the American bison. but largely still excessively dry for farming without the usage of irrigation. Peoples in the Plains lived by chiefly runing American bison. In the Rocky Mountains. dirt was besides was no good for farming. Native American folks in that country such as the Ute lived by runing and assemblage. Along the Mississippi Valley and the Atlantic seashore. there was good farming area. and at that place people like the Mississippians. Iroquois. Sioux. and Cherokee farmed helianthuss. maize. and beans. Because of this. more people were populating at that place. In the Pacific Northwest. there was an copiousness of salmon that could feed a batch of people without farming. and Chinook along with other people lived at that place. The environment changed a great trade between the last Ice Age and 1500 AD. partially because of natural happenings and partially because of things people did. When people crossed over the land span from East Asia. during the Ice Age. North America was partly covered with glaciers. The ice covered the Great Lakes. and most of New York State. The Rocky Mountains had glaciers on them excessively. In the portion of the land that wasnââ¬â¢t covered by glaciers. there were a batch of really large animate beings like mammoths and a immense sort of bison. every bit good as early Equus caballuss and camels. With the terminal of the Ice Age ( 10. 000BC ) . the glaciers melted and shrank. until they merely covered the most northern portion of North America and a small portion of the Rocky Mountains every bit good as other mountains. The clime became warmer all over North America. and there was less grass for the large animate beings to ear. Most of them became extinct. New animate beings like the cowss that became the American American bison. and the Canis familiariss that came along with people. moved in from East Asia. South America South America is a long. narrow continent running from the equator down about to the South pole. So the northern portion near the equator is hot and wet. and the southern portion is really cold. Native Americans spread out rapidly in South America and adapted their life style to the given clime. They inhabited the hot and humid jungles and the cold Andes Mountains. which run down the seashore of South America. In these mountains. there are llamas. Lama guanicoe. vicunas. alpacas. and guinea hogs. The most popular civilization of the country was the Inca. Near the equator. the Amazon River runs east to the Atlantic Ocean. It is the largest river in the universe. and itââ¬â¢s H2O feeds a rich jungle that covers a batch of eastern South America. Rubber trees grow in the jungle. Jaguars. tapirs. chiropterans. toads. and anaconda serpents live at that place. while mahimahis. electric eels and piranhas live in the Amazon River. 3. Some Native American people made a batch of their vesture out of deerskins or the teguments of the other animate beings. Others wore apparels made of yucca and Meleagris gallopavo plumes. While some wove dressing out of bark strips or strands of hemp. Men wore cosmetic chapeaus with plumes. In the cold South near the artic. they made boots out of seal tegument. For nutrient they grew harvests. hunted. fished and gathered wild workss. The work forces had to run while the adult females farmed and gathered. Some of the nutrients they ate were Cucurbita pepos. bison. cervid. elk. blackberries. fish. maize. nuts. beans. and murphies. Through rites and supplications. they tried to delight the liquors. Often their rites included dances. If the liquors liked their dances they would give. in return. rain for their following harvest. Some believed in assorted Gods and practiced the Sun dance. They manus made clayware. wove baskets. and made jewellery to have on. Native Americans used what of all time resources they had to construct their shelter. They used caves for rain. cold air current. a topographic point to conceal for protection from animate beings and enemies. They lived in cone. dome. and rectangular-shaped houses or wigwams. They besides lived in tepees. or wikiups ( a frame of wood held together with yucca fibres and covered with coppice ) . and Hogans. Some built their places out of adobe ( sundried bricks ) . others made their place out of logs. coppice and clay. Other Native Americans lived near the cold artic and used iglu for shelter which were houses made of snow and ice. 4. I believe that I would non be able to last if I was to be transported to the 1490ââ¬â¢s. Teenss today are non taught to hold the accomplishments of endurance that the Native Americans used during that clip. Clearly. we are more advanced now than we were about all those old ages ago. Most of the teens and grownups of todayââ¬â¢s society are so used to holding their smart phone attached to their hip 24/7. Truthfully. I donââ¬â¢t think I could last with out it. Today. if we have a inquiry. we would merely Google it. Make you believe the Native Americans had luxury of researching a job and acquiring an reply in less than 2 proceedingss? It would likely take me a life-time to calculate out the simplest of undertakings if I living in America before 1500 AD. Sometimes we forget to take a minute to believe about how lucky we are. When you think of runing. you think of modern twenty-four hours arms. When you think of farming. you think of tractors and other modern machines. I doubt that the Native Americans had those tools. Heck. I would hold to do my ain tools. Iââ¬â¢d likely starve to decease before I found a manner to do the tools needed to last. I believe most teens today would non be able to last. The fact that engineering. as we know it. would be non-existent in America before Columbus arrived. would do it a really hard being. I genuinely believe that day-to-day life would be excessively hard for me. and I would most likely non survive for really long at all.

Atmospheric Stability and Instability
Atmospheric Stability and Instability Stability (or atmospheric stability) refers to airs tendency to either rise and create storms (instability), or to resist vertical movement (stability). The simplest way to understand how stability works is to imagine a parcel of air having a thin, flexible cover that allows it to expand but prevents the air inside from mixing with the surrounding air- as is true of a party balloon. Next, imagine that we take the balloon and force it up into the atmosphere. Since air pressure decreases with altitude, the balloon will relax and expand, and its temperature will therefore decrease. If the parcel were cooler than the surrounding air, it would be heavier (since cool air is denser than warm air); and if allowed to do so, it would sink back down to the ground. Air of this type is said to be stable. On the other hand, if we lifted our imaginary balloon and the air within it was warmer, and hence, less dense than its surrounding air, it would continue to rise until it reached a point where its temperature and that of its surroundings were equal. This type of air is classified as unstable. Lapse Rates: A Measure of Stability But meteorologists dont have to watch a balloons behavior every time they want to know atmospheric stability. They can arrive at the same answer simply by measuring the actual air temperature at various heights; this measure is called the environmental lapse rate (the term lapse having to do with temperatures decline). If the environmental lapse rate is steep- as is true when the air near the ground is significantly warmer than the air aloft- then one knows the atmosphere is unstable. But if the lapse rate is small, meaning theres relatively little change in temperature, its a good indication of a stable atmosphere. The most stable conditions occur during a temperature inversion when temperature increases (rather than decreases) with height. The easiest way to determine atmospheric stability at a glance is by using an atmospheric sounding. Edited by Tiffany Means.

Macroeconomic in the US Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Macroeconomic in the US - Assignment Example At the moment, one of the major economic issues that the United States economy is facing is an increasing number of unemployed individuals. Though there have been some improvements in creating more jobs, the unemployment rate remains high in the United States. For the last ten years, the United States unemployment statistics have revealed that the unemployment rate is still high. In a significant part of 2003, the unemployment level was below 6 percent. Throughout 2004, the unemployment level was still below 6 percent (Gliksberg, 2013). After the fiscal crisis in 2008, the unemployment level increased severely making many Americans to be jobless. As stated by the United States Bureau of Statistics, the unemployment level was 7.3 percent in November. Due to this, necessary policies need to be adopted so that to bring the unemployment level to sustainable levels. There are different macroeconomic solutions that may assist in helping solve the present unemployment issue in the United States economy. These solutions are both monetary and fiscal policies, which help in maintaining the stability of the economy (Li, 2013). As the present level of unemployment is essentially recurring, it is vital to consider executing expansionary monetary and fiscal policies. An expansionary financial policy may be implemented correctly by taxation, government purchases and also transfer payments. The United States government needs to increase its spending on healthcare and infrastructure. For example, when roads are built, there will be a high demand for materials. This will create jobs for engineers, drivers among other individuals. When taxation is reduced by the government, there will be an increase in disposable income for households. This is reflected directly by increased consumption and will lead to a demand increase (Li, 2013). In meeting this demand in crease, firms will be needed to employ more workers, therefore, reducing the unemployment

Review and critical analysis of any four articles Essay
Review and critical analysis of any four articles - Essay Example He is the author of more than twenty books that touch on American elections and politics. In this book, he brought together an anthology of about 13 essays touching on the 2012 presidential elections. The assembled essays are very compelling and most are reinforced with very useful data. In order to comprehensively analyze the highly competitive and hard-fought 2012 elections Larry needed pulled together election experts drawn from across the political spectrum to highlight every facet of the 2012 election. With contribution from other authors, they provided insight that goes beyond the headlines, and later dives into the underlying forces and drifts that swayed the election from its initial developments to its dramatic conclusion. These contributing writers include the following: Professor James Campbell of SUNY-Buffalo; Professor Diana Owen of Georgetown University; Professor Susan MacManus of the University of South Florida; Professor Alan Abramowitz of Emory University; Jamelle B ouie of American Prospect; Nate Cohn of The New Republic; Rhodes Cook, formerly of Congressional Quarterly; Political writers and commentators Kyle Kondik and Geoff Skelley of the University of Virginia Center for Politics respectively; Karen E. ... In the book ââ¬Å"Barack Obama and the new America; the 2012 election and the changing face of politicsâ⬠the contributors incorporate the controversial roles that unparalleled quantities of cash and media played in deciding on who would be the occupants of the Oval office together with the pivotal seats in the Congress. They also highlight the process of nomination, the futures of the Republican and Democratic parties, and how the latest demographic and geographic electoral assignments would influence the politics of America after 2012. Americaââ¬â¢s evolving electorate by Nate Cohn As cited by Sabato (122-126) contributors Robert Costa of National Review, publisher of Congressional Quarterly, and a former chairman of the Federal Elections Commission, and Nate Cohn of the New Republic, provide an in-depth analysis on a broad array of topics ranging from patterns of voting to the press coverage to the effects of outside funding. According to the article Americaââ¬â¢s evol ving electorate by Nate Cohn, the reelection of President Obama was documented to the third consecutive reelection of head of state, following Presidents Bush and Clinton-during the periods of terrorist attacks, war, sharp political divisions, and great financial turmoil. This has not occurred since the White House Tenures of Thomas Jefferson, James Munroe, and James Madison between 1801 and 1825. Since the US is recognized as the worldââ¬â¢s superpower, voters recognized that it would face challenges regardless of who is in power. They also understand that presidents can not prevent bad things from happening, but are mainly held accountable on how they handle their

Politics of Development Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4250 words
Politics of Development - Research Paper Example This research will begin with the statement that improvement comes in terms of services offered, facilities available in a country for public use and the kind or level of production in the industries of that country. Development of this kind could be termed as economic improvement or growth. Development, especially economic development associates itself with the kind of life people of a particular nation or state lead long and healthy lives. This is where access to the necessary resources that guarantee a civilized standard of living is possible and practical. On the other hand, development revolves around the empowerment where people of a particular nation control their live through finding solutions to their demands and problems. This reflects on the availability of necessities to the nationals of a given nation. In other terms, development is the upward movement of social systems, which include economic and non-economic factors. Development works in a way that creates social, econ omic and political frameworks that are able to stimulate growth in the said area of development. Development fosters easy access to resources, through transformation, or modification of the available facilities to suit the needs of individuals or the nation as a whole. Development of any kind has its own failures and successes associated with it. The various examples of political; development range from good governance that results to better lives through laid down frameworks that ensure provision of the basic necessities in a better and appropriate way. However, the success of economic development is when there is growth in economic sectors where more businesses flourish and production processes yield products with good quality and can be availed to the market at moderate or fare prices. On the other hand, the failures of economic development may result to high rates of inflation, unemployment and high living standards that a country may experience. Economic development has a direc t impact on the lives of people in a country and it affects almost all activities carried out in a country. This is because, the areas of there economy like the lending of money form banks would highly be affected by economic growth, where more people may be encouraged to borrow money or production processes may seem favored by the availability of raw materials at low prices. Improved living standards would be indicators of economic growth. Thus, economic development is more fundamental and appropriate bin understanding what it means by development as the whole world focuses on economic development in various ways. Many countries engage in economic development strategies to improve living standards of people within the countries. Every country has its own history on how it deals with economic matters (Shane 2005). Economic Development in America America was discovered in the year fourteen ninety-two by Christoph Kolumbus, where the first settlers came from Europe and precisely Engla nd. After the arrival of the English people, they began to build colonies that resulted into new cities. In early sixteen nineteen tobacco industry establishment meant that labor force was required and as a result, slaves from Netherlands had to work on the new established tobacco industry plantation and factory. The Americans started fighting and becoming rebellious to the British minority after the Britons formulated unfavorable economic regulations. In the late seventeen seventies, the Americans overpowered the British forces and as a result, the then British King honored a peace agreement signing that granted the Americans independence and George Washington became the first president. Due to his interest in economic affairs, slavery influenced the history of America during his time. Slavery ended with the civil war after Abraham Lincoln who was against became the next American president by

Research Methods in Psychology
Research Methods in Psychology METHODS OF PSYCHOLOGY: Research in psychology is conducted in broad accord with the standards of the scientific method, including both qualitative and quantitative statistical modalities to generate and evaluate explanatory hypotheses with regard to psychological phenomena. These methods vary by the sources of information that are drawn on, how that information is sampled, and the types of instruments that are used in data collection. Methods also vary by whether they collect qualitative data, quantitative data or both. American Psychological Association has laid down the following rules and regulations for researches: Informed consent (tell them what this research is about). There should be no harm to the subject. After the research, you must tell the subject about the deception. Types Of Research Methods: Quantitative research Quantitative research is generally associated with the positivist / post positivist epitome. Usually it is to gather and transform the data into digital form so that statistical calculations can be made and conclusions can be drawn. Qualitative research Qualitative research is the method usually associated with the social constructivist epitome that emphasizes the socially constructed nature of reality. This is about recording, analyzing and trying to discover the meaning and importance of human behavior and experience, including conflicting beliefs, behaviors and deepest emotions. Researchers are interested in obtaining a rich and complex understanding of the experience of people and not in gaining information that can be generalized to larger groups. Requirement of Methodology: All methods used for researches should have the basic three qualities, which are: They have to be standardize (it must have a certain norm). They have to be valid (a test should measure what itââ¬â¢s supposed to measure). They have to be reliable. The following are the different types of research methodologies: Case History Method Experimental Research Correlational Research Survey Method Naturalistic Observation CASE HISTORY METHOD: A case study (or case report) is a descriptive, exploratory or explanatory analysis of a person, group or event. An explanatory case study is used to explore causation in order to find underlying principles.Case study is also called life history/Clinical method. Case study is a detailed investigation of a personââ¬â¢s certain or particular behavior. Case study research excels at bringing us to an understanding of a complex issue or object and can extend experience or add strength to what is already known through previous research. Case study is a descriptive method and it consumes a lot of time. In this method, we are going to question subject, family, relatives, teachers and friends. Typically data is gathered from a variety of sources and by using several different methods (e.g. observations interviews). The case study research method originated in clinical medicine (the case history, i.e. the patientââ¬â¢s personal history). The case study method often involves simply observing what happens to, or reconstructing ââ¬Ëthe case historyââ¬â¢ of a single participant or group of individuals (such as a school class or a specific social group), i.e. the idiographic approach. Case studies allow a researcher to investigate a topic in far more detail than might be possible if they were trying to deal with a large number of research participants. In Case history, we use the following techniques: Day-Book method (day to day development of a child). In this we will question to childââ¬â¢s pediatrician. Biographical Method. Clinical Method (preventing, diagnosing and treating an individual) Social therapy worker, psychologist and physician are collectively going to make a detailed report about the subject. After that they will conclude if the subject needs psycho-therapy or not. Case studies are widely used in psychology and amongst the best known were the ones carried out by Sigmund Freud. He conducted very detailed investigations into the private lives of his patients in an attempt to both understand and help them overcome their illnesses. Freuds most famous case studies include Little Hans (1909a) and The Rat Man (1909b). Even today case histories are one of the main methods of investigation in abnormal psychology and psychiatry. For students of these disciplines they can give a vivid insight into what those who suffer from mental illness often have to endure. SURVEY METHOD: The survey is a non-experimental, descriptive research method. Surveys can be useful when a researcher wants to collect data on phenomena that cannot be directly observed. A survey is a data collection tool used to gather information about individuals. Surveys are commonly used in psychology research to collect self-report data from study participants. A survey may focus on factual information about individuals, or it might aim to collect the opinions of the survey takers. Survey method is a general evaluation and inspection carried out with specific aim in mind to search for particular kind of information. When you have shortage of time, then you go with survey methodology. First we identify the problem on which we want to carry out a research. Then we make a hypothesis on which our whole research would depend on. Then the questionnaire is made. The questions should be simple and clear, so that the subjects would not have any difficulty to understand the questions. Researchers have to ensure that all the questions are valid and relate to the research topic. After that, you sample the population and analyze the results and then conclusions are made according to the results. So following are the steps in survey method: Identify the problem. Determine what you want to study. Sampling the population. Define the population to be studied. Design the questionnaire. Select a representative sample. Administer the survey. Analyze, conclude and discuss the results. PERSPECTIVES: Psychology is a discipline that asks and answers the fundamental question, why do we behave the way we do and think the way we think? The best way to characterize the different approaches that are taken to answer the question of psychology is to identify them as major perspectives. The major perspectives represent fundamental assumptions that underlie the research questions and methods that are used in order to answer the questions of psychology. Most all perspectives define psychology as the discipline interested in studying human behavior and mental processes, but that covers a lot of ground and the causes of behavior and mental processes are not always clear. So there are six major perspectives to explain a human behavior. 1. Biological perspective: 2. Psychoanalytic perspective: 3. Behavioral Perspective: 4. Humanistic Perspective: This perspective emphasizes on the role of motivation on thought and behavior. Two of the most influential and enduring theories in humanistic psychology that emerged in the 1950s and 1960s are those of Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow. The humanistic perspective suggests that we are each responsible for our own happiness and well-being as humans. We have the innate (i.e. inborn) capacity for self-actualization which is our unique desire to achieve our highest potential as people. Because of this focus on the person and his or her personal experiences and subjective perception of the world the humanists regarded scientific methods as inappropriate for studying behavior. Humanistic perspective believes that if are determined to change anything you can. Decision making is in your own hand. So this perspective believes in human capacity and positive side of his behavior. 5. Cognitive Perspective: 6. Social cultural Perspective: SCHOOL OF THOUGHTS: When psychology was first established as a science separate from biology and philosophy, the debate over how to describe and explain the human mind and behavior began. The different schools of psychology represent the major theories within psychology. The modern history of psychology starts from the school of thoughts. The following are the six major schools of thoughts. 1. Structuralism: 2. Functionalism: 3. Gestalt Psychology: Itââ¬â¢s a German school of thought developed by Max Wertheimer, Kohler and Koffka. The word ââ¬ËGestaltââ¬â¢ meaning is ââ¬Ëform, shape or unified wholeââ¬â¢. Gestalt psychology is a school of psychology based upon the idea that we experience things as unified wholes. This approach to psychology began in Germany and Austria during the late 19th century in response to the molecular approach of structuralism. Instead of breaking down thoughts and behavior to their smallest elements, the gestalt psychologists believed that you must look at the whole of experience. According to the gestalt thinkers, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. According to Gestalt psychologists, the human mind works by interpreting data through various laws, rules or organizing principles, turning partial information into a whole. For example, your mind might interpret a series of lines as a square, even though it has no complete lines; your mind fills in the gaps. Gestalt psychotherapists apply this logic to problem-solving to help patients. This school leads to the development of theory of perception. For instance when you perceive something, you perceive as a whole rather than parts of something. 4. Psychodynamic Model: 5. Humanistic Model: Humanistic psychology developed as a response to psychoanalysis and behaviorism. Humanistic psychology instead focused on individual free will, personal growth and the concept of self-actualization. While early schools of thought were largely centered on abnormal human behavior, humanistic psychology differed considerably in its emphasis on helping people achieve and fulfill their potential. This school of thought was developed by Abraham Maslow Carl Rogers. Humanistic psychology is basically a positive psychology, which emphasizes on the positive side of your behavior. This particular branch of psychology is centered on helping people living happier, more fulfilling lives. Humanist psychologists teach that to understand psychology, we must look at individuals and their motivations. Abraham Maslows hierarchy of needs exemplifies this approach: a system of needs, such as food, love and self-esteem, determines a persons behavior to various extents. Meeting these needs leads to a sense of self-satisfaction and solves psychological problems. 6. Behaviorism: 7. Cognitive Model: Objective: Fill in the blanks: Meaning of word ââ¬ËGestaltââ¬â¢ is: __________(form, shape or unified whole) ____________ is a German school of thought.(Gestalt psychology) ____________ School of thought refers to positive psychology. Escaping the Chains of Slavery Essay -- Slavery Essays
In the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave Written by Himself, Douglass writes about his life in slavery. Douglass portrays how he overcame being separated from his mother, of witnessing a slave being whipped for the first time and enduring his servitude for multiple masters. However, his major triumphs in life were moving to Baltimore, overcoming illiteracy and gaining his freedom. Douglass was between the age of seven or eight when he was sent to live in Baltimore, a move that would forever change his life. He was introduced to a different way of living for a slave. For example, on the plantation slaves were subject to merciless beatings, hunger, and cold. Clothing was provided, but if slaves did not sustain them throughout the year, they were forced to walk around half-naked. However, in Baltimore slaves were permitted to walk in the street as free men and women; they were properly dressed and well fed. Furthermore, it was considered an embarrassment to the slaveholder if their neighbors noticed they were not feeding their slaves adequately. Baltimore was of great importance since this is where he was sent to live with his new mistress, who forever changed his life. At the beginning of his stay in Baltimore, his new mistress, Sophia Auld teaches Douglass his A, B, C's. However, when her husband find out what was going on, he put a stop to it. Mr. Auld said, "If you teach that nigger how to read, there would be no keeping him. It w...
